Cobalt Blue Spinel from Luc Yen, Vietnam
A marble valley in northern Vietnam produces the rarest blue in the trade, in sizes that make a two-carat stone a serious object.
Luc Yen is a district of Yen Bai province in the mountains north-west of Hanoi, and its marble has been giving up ruby and spinel since the deposits were found in the late 1980s. The ruby made the district’s name. The spinel made mine: a small fraction of the blue crystals out of that ground carry cobalt instead of iron, and cobalt turns spinel a blue that nothing else in the trade quite matches. Finding it is a matter of patience, chemistry and very small parcels.
What cobalt does
Most blue spinel takes its colour from iron, and iron does to spinel what it does to sapphire: it darkens, greys and drags the hue toward green. The result is a respectable stone that never lights up. In a small number of crystals cobalt substitutes into the structure in trace quantity, and the blue changes character entirely. It goes electric, pure, slightly violetish, with the grey pushed right back, and it holds in every light because there is no pleochroism and no second colour to fight. Spinel’s single refraction means the colour reads the same from every direction, and a cobalt stone at its best looks like a piece of lit glass with nothing behind it.
Cobalt is measurable. A laboratory reads it in the trace-element chemistry, and the words cobalt blue on a serious report describe a fact rather than a compliment. That distinction matters, because the trade has started attaching the phrase to any bright blue spinel, and the price gap between the two is a multiple.
Why the sizes are so small
The crystals come out of marble in the Luc Yen valleys and out of the gravels below them, and most of them are small. Many are included. The colour is often concentrated in zones rather than spread evenly through the crystal, so the cutter loses more than usual finding the clean, saturated heart. A clean stone above two carats of true cobalt colour is scarce; above five carats you are talking about individual objects, not a market. Price per carat climbs in steps everywhere in this trade, and in cobalt spinel the steps are cliffs, because the top of the range barely exists.
How the market works
Luc Yen town has a morning gem market where miners and small dealers open their papers before the heat, and the serious material moves on to Hanoi and from there to Bangkok. Most of what is on the tables is pink and red spinel, ruby, and iron-blue spinel of no consequence. The cobalt stones are the exception the dealers know they hold, and they price them accordingly. A buyer who cannot tell cobalt from a good iron blue in daylight will be sold the iron blue at the cobalt price and go home pleased. What the report must say
Three things. That the stone is natural spinel, because flame-fusion synthetic spinel has been in the trade for generations and turns up wherever a rare colour is worth counterfeiting. That the colour is natural, because cobalt diffusion has been documented on blue spinel and a diffused stone is worth a fraction of a natural one. And the trace-element chemistry that supports the word cobalt. For a stone at the top of the range I want that from a house whose name the next buyer will recognise, because the premium for this material lives entirely on the paper.
Why I hunt it
Because it is one of the few stones in the trade where the colour is still ahead of the reputation. Cobalt spinel has no auction history of consequence, no colour appellation, no century of names. It has a blue that stops conversation and a supply that cannot be scaled, and buyers who saw it early have watched the price of the finest stones move to where fine sapphire sits. I set the best of it beside a Ceylon stone of the same weight and ask a client which one they would rather look at across a room. The answer is usually the one without the name.

Trace cobalt substituting into the spinel structure. Ordinary blue spinel is coloured by iron and reads greyish or greenish; cobalt gives an electric, pure, slightly violetish blue with the grey pushed back. A laboratory can measure the cobalt, so the name belongs to chemistry rather than to praise.
How rare is cobalt blue spinel?
Genuinely rare. Most Luc Yen crystals are small and many are included, so a clean stone above two carats of true cobalt colour is scarce and above five carats is an event. That scarcity is why per-carat prices for the finest stones rose sharply through the last decade and now stand beside fine sapphire.
Is cobalt blue spinel treated?
Natural cobalt spinel is not, but cobalt diffusion has been documented on other blue spinel, and that is precisely the corner of the market where a treated stone costs you most. Anything in the money needs a laboratory report stating natural colour, and the trace-element chemistry that supports it.
