Emerald: Properties, Origins, Treatments and Value
Green beryl, born fissured, coloured by two elements that should never have met beryllium. The stone the trade has been oiling for as long as there has been a trade.
Emerald is green beryl, and green beryl is a geological accident. Beryl needs beryllium, a rare light element concentrated in granite pegmatites. The green needs chromium or vanadium, elements that live in dark rocks of an entirely different origin. For an emerald to form, the two chemistries have to meet, and they meet rarely, violently, and in rock that is still moving. The stone that results is coloured like nothing else on earth and fissured like nothing the trade would otherwise tolerate. Both facts are the same fact.

What it is
Beryl is Be3Al2Si6O18, a ring silicate crystallising in the hexagonal system as six-sided prisms. Hardness 7.5 to 8, which sounds reassuring and is not, because emerald is also brittle, with imperfect cleavage and a habit of arriving full of fractures. Refractive index 1.565 to 1.602, typically around 1.58, birefringence about 0.006, specific gravity 2.67 to 2.78, varying with the alkali content that origin leaves behind. It is pleochroic, bluish green and yellowish green along its two directions. The same mineral in blue is aquamarine, in pink morganite, in yellow heliodor; only the chromium and vanadium green earns the name.
Where the colour comes from
Chromium, Cr3+, and vanadium, V3+, substituting for aluminium, absorbing red and blue-violet and transmitting the green in between. Which of the two dominates, and how much iron rides along, is what separates one origin from another in the hand. Iron greys a green and drags it toward blue. Colombian emerald from the black shales of Boyacá carries almost none, so its green reads pure and warm and holds under a warm lamp. Zambian, Brazilian and most other schist-type emerald carries iron, so the green runs cooler, bluer, often darker. Neither is wrong. They are different greens, and the price knows the difference.
Where it comes from
Colombia is the reference: Muzo and Coscuez in the western belt, Chivor in the eastern, where hot brines moved through carbonaceous shale and beryl crystallised in calcite veins, the chromium and vanadium drawn from the sediments themselves. That geology is unique and it is why Colombian emerald behaves as it does. Everywhere else the classic mechanism applies, pegmatite meeting chromium-bearing schist: Zambia’s Kafubu belt, worked seriously since the 1970s and now home to the largest emerald mine in the world; Brazil in Minas Gerais and Bahia; Zimbabwe at Sandawana; Afghanistan in the Panjshir valley; Pakistan in Swat; Russia in the Urals; and since 2016 Ethiopia at Shakiso. Madagascar contributes. The laboratories separate origins by trace chemistry and inclusions and report a country, never a pit; a named mine on an invoice is a seller’s claim.
How it is judged
Colour above everything: a saturated green of medium tone with the blue or yellow as a nuance rather than a cast, holding under both daylight and a lamp. Then what the trade calls crystal, the transparency of the stone, because an emerald can be clean and still sleepy. Then the jardin, judged not by count but by whether it costs transparency and whether any fissure reaches the surface, especially under a corner, where it is a durability question before it is a clarity one. Emerald is a Type III stone, essentially always included, and buyers arriving from diamonds bring the wrong ruler. Then the cut, almost always the step cut with truncated corners named after the stone, which protects those corners and shows colour rather than brilliance. Then weight, where the per-carat curve climbs steeply because large clean unfilled emerald is rare on two counts at once.
Treatments, and what to demand on paper
Emerald has been filled for as long as it has been traded. Surface-reaching fissures filled with air act like mirrors; filled with something near beryl’s refractive index they largely disappear. The traditional filler is cedarwood oil, which can dry out and be replaced; artificial resins harden in the fissure, are far harder to reverse, and can discolour with age. Every serious report grades the quantity on a scale, none, minor, moderate, significant, with insignificant inserted by some houses, and the better reports name the substance, which is the line most buyers skip. Dyeing appears on poor material. Synthetic emerald, grown by flux and hydrothermal methods for decades, arrives with stories. Read the report in order: identity, then the enhancement line and the substance, then origin.
The market
Colombia sets the records. The Rockefeller Emerald, 18.04 carats, sold in New York in 2017 for around five and a half million dollars, roughly three hundred thousand a carat, on Colombian origin, an acceptable enhancement line and a famous name. Below the records the market tiers by origin, by the enhancement line and by size, and the step from none to minor is real money that widens with weight. Zambian stones of fine colour trade at a discount to Colombian for the same paper, which for some buyers is the whole point of the other green. The commercial tiers, heavily filled Brazilian and Ethiopian goods, are priced as jewellery components rather than as stones.
Care
Never in an ultrasonic cleaner, never in a steamer, never near a jeweller’s torch while set. Oil dries and seeps; resin can craze; a filled fissure exposed to heat or solvents can open. Emerald is hard but brittle and a knock on a corner can take the corner off. A protective setting, gentle cleaning with warm water and a soft brush, and re-oiling by someone who knows the stone every few years are the whole regime.
Where I stand
Emerald is the one stone that makes me qualify my own rule. With corundum I buy unheated and the discussion ends; refuse all filling in emerald and the parcel would be empty. So the rule bends to a fixed point and no further: none, insignificant, or minor, on a Swiss report that names the substance, and no artificial resin at any level. Colombia when the colour and the paper are there, Zambia when the client wants clean green and would rather pay for the crystal than the name. The green is the reason. The line on the report is the discipline.

Why are emeralds always included?
Because of how beryl grows. Emerald forms in tectonically active rock and crystallises with fluid inclusions, fractures and mineral guests that the trade calls the jardin. Laboratories classify it as a Type III stone, essentially always included, so a loupe-clean emerald is either extraordinary or described by someone who has not looked.
What does minor oil mean on an emerald report?
That a small quantity of filler sits in the surface-reaching fissures. The scale runs none, minor, moderate, significant, with some houses adding insignificant below minor, and the better reports name the substance: cedarwood oil, which can be replaced, or artificial resin, which cannot. The step from none to minor is a price step.
Which emerald origin is the most valuable?
Colombia, for comparable stones, because its nearly iron-free black-shale geology gives a pure warm green and because the auction record and the old names are Colombian. Zambian emerald runs bluer, cleaner and cheaper; Brazilian and Ethiopian material fills the commercial tiers. The laboratories report a country, never a mine.
