Kashmir Sapphire: Why Origin Sets the Price

A deposit worked out in a decade still sets the ceiling for blue sapphire. What the velvet actually is, and what the paper has to prove.


A landslide in the Zanskar range opened the deposit around 1881. The workings sit above four thousand metres in Padar, in country that is snowbound most of the year. The richest pocket — what the trade still calls the Old Mine — was effectively exhausted within a decade. Everything the market pays for Kashmir today rests on that short window.

Scarcity alone does not explain the premium. Other deposits have gone quiet. What Kashmir has is an optical signature that no other source reproduces consistently.

What the velvet is

The look is described as velvety, or sleepy — a blue that reads soft rather than glassy, and holds its colour when the light changes. It is not a colour so much as a scattering effect. The stones carry a dense population of minute inclusions and exsolved rutile silk, fine enough that they do not register as flaws at ten power, numerous enough to diffuse light passing through the stone.

That diffusion does two things. It spreads colour evenly across the face, so the stone does not go patchy or extinct as it tilts. And it softens the hard mirror return that makes a very clean sapphire look like glass. The result is a blue that appears to be lit from inside.

A stone can be too sleepy. Past a certain density the silk takes the brilliance with it and the stone goes flat and grey. The material that commands the records sits at a narrow point on that curve — enough silk to velvet the colour, not enough to drown it.

How the origin call is made

No laboratory measures provenance directly. Origin is an opinion, formed by matching a stone against reference collections: the inclusion suite, the trace-element chemistry and the spectral behaviour, taken together. Kashmir material tends to show characteristic zoning, a particular population of mineral inclusions, and a trace-element profile that separates it from Sri Lankan and Burmese sources.

Tends to. The separations are statistical rather than absolute, and overlaps exist. This is why important stones travel to more than one laboratory, and why a Kashmir call from a house whose opinion the auction market accepts is worth more than the same two words from a lesser one. The commercial consequence is blunt. The gap between a stone called Kashmir and the same stone called Ceylon is the largest origin premium in coloured stones. That premium sits entirely on an opinion. Buy the opinion from a laboratory whose opinion the next buyer will also accept.

What I check before the paper

Colour in daylight, against masters, before anything else. Then the face-up behaviour across the tilt range, because the velvet has to hold rather than present at one flattering angle. Then depth and windowing — Kashmir rough is treated with reverence and cut with caution, and caution puts weight in the belly.

Only then the report. A Kashmir call on a stone I would not otherwise want is an expensive way to own a mediocre sapphire.

The origin is worth what the next laboratory will agree it is worth. Everything else in the price is the stone.
