Grandidierite: Properties, Origins, Rarity and Value

Named for a French explorer, found in southern Madagascar in 1902, and for a century known only as an opaque mineral. Then a pocket of transparent crystals turned it into one of the rarest gems anyone can buy.


Grandidierite was described in 1902 from Andrahomana, on the southern coast of Madagascar, and named after Alfred Grandidier, the French naturalist who spent his life mapping the island. For more than a century it was a mineral for collectors of minerals: bluish green, opaque to translucent, and of no interest to a cutter. Then, around 2014, transparent crystals came out of the Tranomaro region in the south, and a stone nobody had thought of as a gem became, almost overnight, one of the rarest gems on earth that a buyer can actually acquire.

What it is

A magnesium aluminium borosilicate, (Mg,Fe)Al3(BO3)(SiO4)O2, crystallising in the orthorhombic system as elongated, often flattened crystals. Hardness 7.5, which is respectable, undermined by a good cleavage in one direction that makes cutting and setting a matter of care. The refractive index runs from about 1.583 to 1.639 with a strong birefringence near 0.038, so facet edges double visibly through the stone under a loupe. Specific gravity around 2.98. The trichroism is strong and defines the stone: dark blue-green along one direction, near-colourless along the second, dark green along the third, so the cutter orients the rough to put the blue-green face-up and loses weight doing it. In the hand a good stone reads as a cool, slightly greyish blue-green that stays transparent, unlike the opaque material of the first century.

Where the colour comes from

Iron, as Fe2+, substituting for magnesium. The more iron, the bluer and darker the stone; the less, the paler and greener. Because the colour rides on iron rather than on chromium or copper there is no fluorescence and no neon, and the stone does not light up the way a Paraíba or a Mahenge spinel does. What it has instead is a colour that occurs nowhere else in the trade and a transparency that, in the best crystals, is complete. The strong pleochroism means the same stone can look nearly colourless from the side and saturated from the top, and buyers should judge it face-up, in daylight, and then tilt it.

Where it comes from

Madagascar, almost entirely. The type locality at Andrahomana produced the opaque material; the gem-quality crystals since 2014 come from the Tranomaro region of the Anosy area in the south, from a small number of pits worked by hand. A few transparent stones have been reported from Kolonne in Sri Lanka, and the mineral occurs elsewhere without ever reaching gem quality. Origin does not move the price, because there is effectively one origin. What moves it is that the supply depends on whether a handful of miners find another pocket, and for several years now the answer has been: sometimes.

How it is judged

Transparency first, because that is what separates a gem from a specimen, and most grandidierite is not fully transparent even now. Then colour, on the usual axes, with the market preferring a saturated blue-green of medium tone over both the pale greenish stones and the very dark ones. Then clarity, where small stones can be clean and larger ones rarely are. Then cut, which must manage the pleochroism and protect the cleavage. Then size, where the per-carat curve is nearly vertical: clean faceted stones above one carat are scarce, above two exceptional, and the largest fine stones on record are a handful of carats. Cabochons and translucent stones trade at a fraction of the price of transparent faceted material and should not be confused with it.

Treatments, and what to demand on paper

None is known. Grandidierite is not heated, filled or diffused, and that puts all of the risk on identity. The stone is unfamiliar, its colour resembles nothing else closely but several things loosely, and a buyer who has never handled a genuine example is easy to sell something else. A report from Gübelin, SSEF, GIA or AGL confirming the species is not optional; it is the purchase. Read it for identity first, and expect no treatment line beyond the confirmation that none was detected.

The market

The market is a few dozen serious stones a year, priced individually. Clean faceted grandidierite of good colour trades per carat at levels that surprise buyers arriving from sapphire, and the largest stones are effectively unpriced until someone wants one. There is no auction record book, no colour appellation, no standard, and liquidity is thin: the buyer for a fine grandidierite is a collector who already knows what it is, and there are not many of them. That is the definition of a collector’s stone, and a collection built for value holds one, if at all, as the rarity in the case rather than as its centre.

Care

Hardness 7.5 protects the polish; the cleavage does not protect the stone. Grandidierite belongs in a pendant, earrings or a protected ring setting, away from knocks, and out of the ultrasonic. Cleaned with warm water and a soft brush it will keep its colour and its transparency indefinitely, because there is nothing in it to fade or dry out.

Where I stand

Grandidierite is a stone I have handled and would hunt for the right mandate, which is a collector who wants the rarest transparent gem they can legally own and understands that they are buying scarcity rather than fire. It is not an investment in the sense my clients usually mean, because the market for it is a few hundred people worldwide. It is a stone for someone who wants to hold a colour that exists in one region of one island, and knows it.

Why is grandidierite so rare?

The mineral itself is uncommon, and for over a century every specimen was opaque or translucent. Transparent crystals clean enough to facet were found in one region of southern Madagascar from 2014, in small quantities and small sizes. A clean faceted stone above two carats is exceptional, and the supply depends on a handful of pits.

What colour is grandidierite?

Blue-green to greenish blue, from iron, with a strong trichroism that shows dark blue-green, near-colourless and dark green along the three crystal directions. Cutters orient for the bluest face-up colour. Lighter stones are more transparent; darker ones carry more iron and more saturation.

Is grandidierite treated?

No treatment is known, which puts all of the risk on identity and on the quality of the rough. Because the stone is unfamiliar, a laboratory report from a serious house confirming the species is essential; it is one of the few gems where a buyer may never have seen a genuine example before.
