Tsavorite: Properties, Origins, Treatments and Value
A green garnet fifty years old in the trade, born in one metamorphic belt, untreated because nothing improves it, and rare above five carats because the rock will not give it up whole.
Tsavorite is green grossular, a calcium aluminium garnet coloured by vanadium and chromium, and it has been a gem for about fifty years. That makes it a young stone in a trade that measures reputation in centuries, and its market shows it: no auction record of consequence, no colour appellation, no origin premium, and a price that has not caught up with what the stone is. What the stone is, mineralogically, is one of the most honest green gems in the world, untreated because nothing improves it, and rare in size because the rock that made it will not give it up whole.

What it is
Grossular is Ca3Al2(SiO4)3, a member of the garnet group, crystallising in the cubic system as dodecahedra and trapezohedra. Pure grossular is colourless; tsavorite is the variety coloured green by vanadium and chromium. Hardness 7 to 7.5, no cleavage, good toughness. Refractive index close to 1.740, and singly refractive, so no birefringence and no pleochroism: the stone reads the same colour from every direction and the cutter orients for yield alone. Strain often shows as anomalous double refraction between crossed polars, which alarms people who look for it and means nothing. Specific gravity around 3.61. The name was coined by Tiffany in 1974 after Tsavo, the Kenyan national park near the first commercial finds, and it has never been adopted by mineralogy, which still calls the stone what it is.
Where the colour comes from
Vanadium, V3+, is the chief chromophore, with chromium, Cr3+, alongside it in varying amounts, both substituting for aluminium. Together they absorb across the blue-violet and the red and transmit a green that in the best stones is saturated, slightly yellowish or slightly bluish, and holds under both daylight and a lamp. Iron is the enemy: where it is present the green drags toward olive and the life goes out of the stone. There is no fluorescence and no neon; what tsavorite has instead is a high refractive index for a green stone and a dispersion around twice emerald’s, most of which saturation buries, so a well-cut stone is lively in a way emerald rarely is.
Where it comes from
One metamorphic belt, Neoproterozoic in age, running down East Africa from Kenya through Tanzania and on into Madagascar. Campbell Bridges found green grossular in north-eastern Tanzania in the late 1960s and again in southern Kenya near Tsavo a few years later, and the Kenyan side gave the stone its name; Bridges was killed in Kenya in a dispute over mining ground, and production there has been erratic since, though it has not stopped and the family ground is still worked. Merelani in northern Tanzania, out of the same graphitic gneiss that hosts tanzanite, now supplies at least as much, with Lemshuko and Komolo nearby. Madagascar produces a little. Laboratories can sometimes separate Kenyan from Tanzanian material and nobody pays for the answer; the border was drawn by governments, and the stone is the same.
How it is judged
Colour first, on the three axes: a saturated green of medium tone, with any yellow or blue as a nuance, and no olive. Tsavorite at full saturation can run dark under a weak light, so tone matters more than buyers expect, and a lighter, brighter stone often reads better in a room than a darker one that looks richer on the tray. Then clarity, where tsavorite is normally eye-clean and included stones are discounted rather than tolerated; graphite from the host rock appears in Merelani goods. Then cut, which should return light, because the stone can afford a brilliant or mixed cut where emerald cannot. Then size, and size is the whole story. Rough arrives small and broken from folded gneiss, cutters lose most of it, and the price per carat climbs in steps steeper than almost anywhere in the trade: a clean stone of two carats is ordinary, five carats is serious, and above ten there is no market, only individual objects.
Treatments, and what to demand on paper
Nothing is done to tsavorite. There is no commercial heat treatment, no diffusion, no routine filling; fracture filling has been reported on badly broken goods and is not what you meet in the better material. Nothing in the standard repertoire improves the colour, so nothing is applied, and untreated is the condition of the species rather than a choice anyone made. The corollary is unforgiving: a mediocre tsavorite cannot be rescued, and you buy exactly what the pocket gave up. A report confirms species and the absence of treatment and, for a large stone, is worth having because large tsavorite is rare enough to attract imitation, chiefly green glass and synthetic garnet of other kinds.
The market
Underpriced, for reasons commercial rather than gemmological. The trade pays for narrative and this one is fifty years old; there is no appellation, no auction history, no origin premium, and no famous stone beyond the few large crystals that made news when they were cut. Fine tsavorite above five carats trades per carat at a fraction of Colombian emerald of comparable colour, with none of emerald’s oil and all of its green, and that gap is the case for the stone. Care
Hardness 7 to 7.5 and no cleavage make tsavorite a sound ring stone, though it abrades slowly in daily wear and a ring worn every day for decades will want repolishing. Ultrasonic cleaning is safe on clean stones. There is no oil to dry, no filling to fail and no heat to protect.
Where I stand
Tsavorite is in this office’s portfolio because it meets every rule without exception: untreated, saturated, sound, and priced below its quality. I buy it at origin in Tanzania and through Nairobi, in daylight against masters, and I put it beside emerald for any client whose green is the point rather than the name. The garnet family it belongs to is the most undervalued in the trade, and tsavorite is its finest member.
Questions collectors ask
Is tsavorite better than emerald?
Different, not better. Tsavorite has a higher refractive index, no cleavage and no oil, so it returns more light and wears harder, and it is untreated. Emerald reaches sizes tsavorite never does, has the auction record, and shows a cooler, softer green that collectors pay for. Tsavorite is the more honest stone; emerald is the more famous one.
Why is a large tsavorite so rare?
The crystals grow in isolated nodules in folded, fractured gneiss, and the mining is shaft and hand work along a reef that does not scale. Rough arrives small and broken, cutters lose much of it, and a clean stone of five carats is a serious object. Above ten carats there is no market, only individual stones.
Which is better, Kenyan or Tanzanian tsavorite?
Neither. Both fields sit in the same Neoproterozoic metamorphic belt and the border between them was drawn by governments, not geology. A laboratory can sometimes separate them, but no origin premium exists. The stone is judged on colour, clarity and size, and the country is a footnote.
